When the dust cleared, the car had magically stopped on its own, over on the other side of the road, several inches from a steep embankment. I saw that the Old Coach had elected to use the emergency instructor's brake. As a matter of fact, he was now wrapped bodily around the emergency instructor's brake and trembling feverishly. The sun through the windshield reflected on a few of his former hairs, gently floating down from the ceiling. The kid in the back let out a long, low whistle.

"DANG, Suggs," he said with admiration.

Out the window, I saw several ninth graders running for cover.

Finding the Elusive Christmas Toy

Weeks passed and still, no Color Gameboy. In time, during those desperate months, I became part of a close-knit mob that assembled in the parking lots of various department stores and commercial boutiques just before the crack of dawn. We'd smile palely and greet each other as a close-knit fraternity of seekers, always knowing that, should a single Gameboy flash before our eyes, we would become a howling mob ready to trample each other.

These are the tales—sometimes amusing, sometimes uplifting—told around the kitchen table by the Suggs family, which survived all eleven of these adventures and lived to tell the tale.
