Exactly what does a book manuscript editor do? He works with the author from the initial stages of the manuscript and the grand idea that launched it. He must be able to step behind the binoculars of another writer and take in the same vision, with an eye for both the forest and the trees. Working from the author's first draft, he begins sculpting away, with participles, modifiers, and carefully crafted imagery. Sentence by sentence he works to reflect the heart, soul, and distinctive voice of that primary author. Then comes the moving climax of his endeavors: he sends an invoice!
